I usually surf the internet for the next hot thing, but thankfully Midas made my job so much easier by finding me! In the most professional manner this gentleman, Phillip Bonhomme known to the world as Midas, sent me all the things I would need to interview him. I asked how he found me, and he said he was impressed with the write up I did  As a journalist this is what I appreciate, and as a musician I was floored. From the drums down to the syncopated, percussion of the piano I could not believe that one person played this. An expert at saxophone and piano, I was sure this young man would have what it takes to get to the top.

BiBi: Hi honey, so tell me where did you come up with Midas?

Midas: You know the story about the King Midas and everything he touched turned to gold?

BiBi: Yes.

Midas: Well that’s where it came from, I found out about it and sort of just ran with it.

BiBi: Where are you from?

Midas: I am from DC/MD area.

BiBi: Oh DMV, shouts to them I love it there! Very cultural! So, I see you have or are working on placements. How do you feel about the opportunities and how are you getting yourself out there?

Midas: Well as far as the placements that are pending I am far too excited. It’s amazing validation that all the blood, sweat and tears are finally going to pay off. Just validation for handwork.

BiBi: What is your plan to attack the music industry?

Midas: Well I am in a trial period with District Music Group, but either way I’m going to keep working and make sure when I reach my goal the next one I reach will be better.

BiBi: Do you think you would fair better if you were signed to a major label?

Midas: Well I’m still unknown, so in a sense if I had a machine behind me to put me out there or in the focus of a larger outlet for help; I am completely open to it.

BiBi: If signed how much creative control would you want over your project?

Midas: I would like as much as possible. The one thing about my music is I do music that would not be considered the norm, and it can’t be bound by perimeters. It should be organic.

BiBi: What can people expect from your music?

Midas: Good question. I believe they can expect a very strong musical background, so I definitely bring musicianship incorporating saxophone and piano in my work. I just like to think I am blazing new trails.

BiBi: What would you say was your biggest break so far in this industry?

Midas: I would say my biggest break was last year when I won first place in the DC Beat Battle that was hosted by J.U.S.T.I.C.E League. I got a lot of awesome feedback and a lot of press.

BiBi: What life changing event, if any, helps influence your music today?

Midas: Maybe when I was in high school and I was a band kid {we chuckle}. I was sitting around one day and sat at the piano and just started to play. Then some kid came in and started beat boxing and then another came and started free styling. A crowd began to grow and I thought all this happened because I was playing my piano.

BiBi: Yeah that did sound pretty awesome! Fill in the blanks. Ready?

Midas: Yes.

Without music I’d be lost.

Music is the reason I wake up in the morning.

My music makes me feel that I have a voice.

[Editor’s Note] Dear Ms. Keesha,

Dear Keesha,

I am writing this because I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for allowing the children to dream, I was once one of your “black pearls” and you gave me a voice in a place where strong voices went unnoticed. You gave me one of my earliest experiences in acting and going beyond myself to become a character so far from my personality, thank you. You helped me nurture a talent of song that I still, to this day, keep as pure as possible. You made it possible for me to record my first record at the tender age of 17, and also helped me reclaim a proclamation for my performance as The Wiz; thank you.

Present day, you still inspire me to dream to be better. When I started this blog I promised myself, I would try to give you back half of what you’ve given me and so many others, a voice. You continue to mentor me even from afar, you are awesome! Every opportunity I get to view some of your work I take it because I know it will be great! Ms. Keesha, you are the epitome of a phenomenal woman and on behalf of all the people whose lives you’ve changed for the better, thank you!

I remember when this artist recorded and heard his voice on wax for the very first time, believe me it was a humbling experience for us all. Damien Crawford is young, fresh, and bold new face with the sound that embodies all genres of music from hip hop, to r&b, and even rock. He is sure to make a splash on the music scene.

BiBi: Where are you from? Where did your name originate?

I was born and raised in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Even though Damien is not my birth name, it is one of the names my mother chose for me. When I was older, she told me she was going to name me Damien when I was born. I felt such a strong connection to that name that soon after, I started telling everyone my name was Damien. Crawford is my grandmother’s maiden name. It has such an old Hollywood sound, full of star quality.

BiBi:  How would you describe your music?

My music is a mix of R&B, hip-hop, pop and even rock. I like to refer to it as Urban pop. I wanted to create a sound that incorporated my favorite genres and speak to the masses.

BiBi: Who were your childhood influences?

I grew up in the 90’s so I fell in love with artists like Brandy, Monica, Jodeci, R.Kelly, Destiny’s Child etc.

-what is your first experience with music?

I grew up playing instruments like the saxophone & piano at the age of 11. Once I started I was hooked. I learned how to play more instruments, write sheet music, and soon after I knew I wanted to sing.

-what type of music did you listen to?

I listened to a lot of R&B and pop. I loved music from artists like Boyz II Men to Britney Spears and even Alanis Morissette.

BiBi: Why did you decide to pursue your music?

Music makes me happy. Its something that excites me and keeps my creative juices flowing. Music is forever evolving and it constantly gives me new ways to express myself.

BiBi: What can the people expect from your music?

-Live performance?

I am all about putting on a show. I love dramatics, and high energy performances so thats what people can always expect from Damien Crawford. I want people to be completely entertained when they come to my shows. From vocals, to dance, to theatrics, I will always give my audience 110% of me.

BiBi: What would you describe as your biggest break in music thus far?

My biggest break thus far would be opening for pop superstar Neon Hitch in Baltimore. There were over 5,000 people in the audience so that was a huge show for me.

I’ve also been featured in a few magazines and newspapers but as cheesy as it sounds, another one of my biggest moments was running in to Ty Hunter (Beyonce’s Stylist) and him telling me that him and Beyonce loved my live rendition of End of Time in Baltimore. Check it out on Youtube!

BiBi: If signed, how much creative control would you want over your career?

I’d like to maintain a pretty large amount of control over my career. An artist is his/her best when he or she is being themselves. I want people to know Damien Crawford as an artist, not who a label thinks Damien Crawford should be.

BiBi: Thinking back what are some life changing events that help influence your music?

Losing my grandmother was the most devastating event in my life. I pull form this experience for intense, emotional lyrics to incorporate in my music.

I have experienced horrible break ups which help me create songs relatable to people who have ever endured relationships. On the flip side I’ve also experienced love, which helps me write songs that give people hope and stroke the need for companionship.

BiBi: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’d love to be an established, signed artist making music, acting, and developing my brand.

BiBi: Fill in the Blanks

Without music I’d be UNFUNFILLED

My music makes me feel HUMAN

I write music because IT HELPS EXPRESS HOW I FEEL

With a bright future in tow, Damien has plans to take his music to the next level! Make sure you go watch out for his music, and follow him on twitter @DamienCrawford.

Reese- The Budding Independent Star

Yesterday, I went to check out one of Atlanta’s up and coming indie artist, Reese. He recently released the first single “MOLLY” off his soon to be released mix tape Reese VS The World 2. The highly anticipated mix tape brings a fresh new look to hip hop music and culture! An avid skateboarder and lover of fashion and art, his “designer trappin” lifestyle is enough to keep something to rap about. I sat down with Reese and listened to the some music off Reese Vs. The World 2 mix tape, (which is going to be one of the dopest out at the end of the month) and others in his catalogue (which is extensive, might I add). He discussed whether or not he wants to stay independent and what independent artistry means to him. When asked what his plans were he simply said, “Look at what I’ve accomplished independently, do you think I need to be signed to a major label?” all I could do was shake my head and say no.

The mix tape, which is hosted by DJ Don Cannon, serves up hard-hitting high hats and trap beats from an all star cast of producers with,  Don Cannon, Sonny Digital, and Pharrell to name a few. For Reese to only have been rapping 4 years, he is proof that big things can happen when you’re serious about your craft!

Frank Ocean Doesn’t Swim That Good or Does He?

Hello people!

I hope everybody has something exciting planned for July 4th.  Go outside, enjoy yourself, get fly and flirt a little lol.  IN THE MEANTIME!!! DID YOU HEAR ABOUT MY BOY FRANK OCEAN?

It all started a little over 24 hours ago when reports from max from BBC did an album review for his new album “Channel Orange” (which I will be purchasing). She stated that his songs “Pink Matter” , “Forrest Gump” , and “Bad Religion” involved lyrical content that replaced “hers” with “hims”.  My initial thoughts took me back to a Bossip article recently that had their blind item stating that an R&B artist would be revealing his sexuality.  Everyone automatically assumed it was Miguel (his first album is SLEPT ON btw). HOWEVER, it is appearing that this is no longer the case.

More media outlets were reporting the same thing, but I noticed they kept on using max reviews on the album as a source.  I started to get skeptical of the whole thing UNTIL!!!!

One of my followers on twitter sent me the link to frank oceans tumblr.  The blog was like reading into a diary combined w/ his creative lyrical talent.  I  was intrigued and shocked at the same time.

When it’s all said and done.  I salute Frank Ocean for doing what MANY of these  guys in the music industry NEED to do!! It’s been way too many speculations of too many men in the music and entertainment industry that are suspect.  They choose to deny and cover it up in the public eye by dating the most beautiful and sultry women (known as beards), or have several children by different women and pose as this casanova that can’t be tamed.  They know ladies love them and maintain that image.  Frank Ocean is sexy and a great writer.  I will never get tired of hearing “love crimes” ,”pyramids”, “voodoo”, and “thinking about you”.

I am aware that men love his music too prior to this.  Don’t switch up and get homophobic because I’m sure you have grooved to luther in your lifetime.  Don’t take away his talent the man can WRITE!!  I will still support him as an artist regardless of his sexual preference.  Too bad he won’t be too many women flavor after this.  What are your thoughts?  The link to his tumbler is below..its a must read!  Happy 4th people!!
